The Road Ahead for Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains

February 07, 2025 ・0 comments

Following the successful trial of the prototype, Indian Railways is gearing up to produce nine additional Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets between April and December 2025. These trains aim to redefine long-distance travel with enhanced efficiency and passenger comfort.

To support this ambitious initiative, Indian Railways placed a significant order on December 17, 2024, for propulsion systems for 50 rakes of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets. The order has been awarded to two prominent Indian manufacturers, with delivery expected within two years:

  • M/s Medha will supply propulsion systems for 33 rakes.

  • M/s Alstom will provide propulsion systems for 17 rakes.

Full-scale production of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets is slated to begin in 2026-27, marking a significant step toward India’s self-reliance in railway technology.

A New Era of Speed and Luxury in Rail Travel

The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are designed to offer a premium travel experience, featuring automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard WiFi, and an aircraft-inspired design. Building on the success of the 136 Vande Bharat trains currently operating on medium and short routes, the sleeper variant promises a quieter, smoother, and more luxurious journey, complete with advanced safety features and world-class amenities.

Developed under the Make in India initiative, the Vande Bharat Sleeper exemplifies India’s engineering prowess and its commitment to revolutionizing rail travel.

Key Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

  • Coaches: 16 coaches divided into three classes—AC 1st Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier.

  • Capacity: Accommodates 1,128 passengers.

  • Safety: Equipped with crash buffers, deformation tubes, and a fire barrier wall.

  • Amenities: Automatic doors, cushioned berths, and onboard WiFi.

Before the official launch of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) will conduct a thorough analysis of trial runs and issue a final certification. Additionally, the railway safety commissioner will evaluate the train at its maximum speed to ensure compliance with safety standards.

As Indian Railways moves forward with this transformative project, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set stands as a testament to the nation’s vision of modern, efficient, and passenger-centric transportation.
