On April 16, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the inauguration of Amravati Airport in Maharashtra, describing it as “great news” for the state, particularly the Vidarbha region. The state-of-the-art airport, officially launched by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, marks a historic milestone in enhancing regional connectivity and economic development. Funded under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) and Viability Gap Funding (VGF), the airport’s inaugural flight by Alliance Air from Amravati to Mumbai signals a new era of growth and opportunity for the region.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the transformative potential of the Amravati Airport, stating, “Great news for Maharashtra, especially Vidarbha region. An active airport in Amravati will boost commerce and connectivity.” His remarks underscore the government’s commitment to integrating underserved regions into India’s economic mainstream through enhanced infrastructure. The airport, developed by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), is the third in Vidarbha with planned commercial operations, following Gondia and Nagpur, and is poised to become a vital hub for the region’s industrial and agricultural sectors.
The inauguration ceremony also highlighted the establishment of South Asia’s largest Air India Flying Training Organisation (FTO) at the airport, a significant leap for India’s aviation ecosystem. Union Minister Naidu, speaking at the event, noted, “Today marks a historic milestone for Vidarbha. Under PM Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, this RCS-VGF funded airport takes flight with Alliance Air’s inaugural Amravati-Mumbai flight.” The FTO is expected to train skilled aviation professionals, further positioning Amravati as a center for aviation excellence.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hailed the airport as a catalyst for an “economic revolution” in Vidarbha, a region that has historically faced developmental challenges. Speaking at the launch event, he said, “The city of Amravati will get special recognition due to the state-of-the-art Amravati Airport and Pilot Training Centre. By completing developmental works in Vidarbha and bringing this region into the mainstream, priority will be given to this work.” Fadnavis highlighted the airport’s potential to create direct and indirect employment opportunities, particularly in the textile industry, as entrepreneurs prioritize setting up industries in areas with improved connectivity.
The airport’s strategic location and modern infrastructure, including a completed Air Traffic Control (ATC) facility, terminal building, and runway, are expected to attract investment and boost local businesses. The planned PM Mitra Park in Amravati, projected to create two lakh jobs, will further amplify the region’s economic prospects, benefiting cotton farmers and the textile value chain from “cotton to cloth and further fashion.” The airport’s connectivity to Mumbai, India’s financial capital, is anticipated to enhance trade, tourism, and industrial growth, giving Amravati a new identity on the national stage.

The Amravati Airport’s launch aligns with the Modi government’s ambitious vision to democratize air travel and improve regional connectivity under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. The government’s efforts to enhance passenger experiences were also evident, with Naidu referencing the expansion of UDAN Yatri Cafes, which provide budget-friendly food options at airports. Following successful launches in Kolkata and Chennai, a similar cafe is planned for Delhi Airport, reflecting a holistic approach to aviation infrastructure development.
The airport’s inauguration comes on the heels of other aviation milestones, such as the recent launch of Hisar’s Maharaja Agrasen Airport terminal and Ayodhya’s Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, demonstrating the government’s focus on expanding India’s aviation network. The Amravati Airport, with its modern facilities and strategic importance, is a testament to this commitment, promising to elevate Vidarbha’s role in India’s growth story.

The journey to operationalizing Amravati Airport was not without hurdles.
