The Ministry of Power and New and Renewable Energy has assured renewable energy sector stakeholders that it is working to resolve regulatory issues at the earliest. This assurance was given at a meeting between the Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, and renewable energy sector stakeholders on October 20, 2023.
Some of the key regulatory issues discussed at the meeting included:
- Dual connectivity: Renewable energy developers have been demanding dual connectivity, which will allow them to sell their power to multiple buyers. The Center has assured stakeholders that it is working on a framework for dual connectivity.
- Contractual conditions: Renewable energy developers have also raised concerns about certain contractual conditions, such as the requirement to pay liquidated damages for delays in commissioning projects. The Center has assured stakeholders that it is reviewing these contractual conditions.
- Demand charges: Renewable energy developers have also complained about being charged demand charges by states. The Center has assured stakeholders that it is taking up this issue with the states.
- SEZ policies: Renewable energy developers have also raised concerns about certain SEZ policies, such as the requirement to export at least 70% of their power. The Center has assured stakeholders that it is taking up this issue with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The Center's assurance to renewable energy sector stakeholders is a welcome step. It shows that the government is committed to resolving the challenges faced by the sector. This is important because the renewable energy sector is a key driver of India's energy transition and its commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The early resolution of regulatory issues will help to boost the growth of the renewable energy sector in India. It will also help to attract more investment in the sector. This will create more jobs and help to reduce India's dependence on fossil fuels.
